Schnellstraßen in Austria

In Austria, the term Schnellstraße refers to a category of high-speed roads; however, it is not officially recognized in Austrian traffic law as a distinct road type. Instead, these roads are classified either as motorways (Autobahnen) or expressways (Autostraßen), depending on their specific construction standards and traffic features.

Several Schnellstraßen, such as the S1, S2, S6, S33, and S36, meet full motorway criteria and are treated accordingly. Others, like the S4 and S31, only partially follow motorway standards. A notable exception is the S35: even though it features a motorway-style profile and allows speeds up to 130 km/h in some sections, it retains the designation of expressway due to the presence of multiple sharp curves along the route.
