Manchester
Manchester, host to Summer 2002's Commonwealth Games, is a city of huge culture and importance within the UK. Chester
Chester is perhaps one of the oldest cities in England and this is apparent as soon as you enter it. The streets are narrow and the houses are old, many of which are thatched. Chester boasts the most complex city wall, the largest Roman amphitheatre uncovered in Britain, the oldest horse races and the oldest rowing regatta. This is indeed an old and beautiful city and small enough to completely explore on foot. The history of this city is apparent at every turn - visit the Rows medieval shopping galleries, the stunning Normal cathedral, the Roman remains at the Grosvenor Museum and street upon street of wonderful Tudor architecture. The Chester Grosvenor Hotel is probably the most fashionable and stylish place to stay although there are many hotels guest houses and bed and breakfasts on offer in the area. Preston
Preston is a very new city having only been given the status by Her Majesty the Queen and this recognises Preston's diverse community, ancient history and regional importance. Preston's city centre is undergoing a massive revamp to upgrade it to one of the most modern cities in the country. The history of Preston dates back to 1080 as it features in the Doomsday Book. Preston has many wonderful attractions, including the grade one listed Harris Museum and Art Gallery, the Museum of Lancashire and the Museum of the Queen's Lancashire Regiment. For football lovers, the city also houses the National Football Museum at Deepdale, Preston North End's home ground. If museums aren't really your thing then there is plenty to see and do at the Riversway, Europe's largest single dock basin with marina, leisure and shopping centres. The opening of the Ribble Link marked the opening of the first new canal to be built in 100 years and connects the Lancaster Canal to the Leeds and Liverpool Canal which opened up Preston to the national waterways network.
