The town of Banbury in Oxfordshire dates back to 250 AD when a Roman villa was built in Wykham Park. The Saxons later developed Banbury in the 5th Century by building to the west of the River Cherwell. They then built Grimsbury on the opposite bank which was later incorporated into Banbury. There are a number of small and independent shops in the town centre as well as the usual big chains and there is a Farmers Market on the First Friday of every month. The Banbury Cross is located on a roundabout in the middle of the town and was erected in 1859 to celebrate the wedding of Price Frederick of Prussia to his bride, the original cross having been pulled down some 250 years earlier.
