Boston

A major port in the Middle Ages, Boston lies near the mouth of the River Witham. By the end of the 13th Century the town was one of the most important wool traders in the country, exporting the fleeces of three million sheep annually. Boston also played an active part in history when, in the 17th Century, it temporarily imprisoned a group of religious separatists looking to settle in the virtually unknown territories of the New World. These later became known as the Pilgrim Fathers, the first white settlers of the US. Word of their success made it back to the English Boston whereupon a crowd of locals decided to sail across the Atlantic, where they founded a namesake town in the new colony of Massachusetts.
